What does it mean to be tactful?

Some situations require from us not merely to choose a course of action between two binary poles: whether right or wrong, good or bad according to a certain set of rules.

Without going against one’s own set of principles and values, in a wide range of situations while dealing with difficult issues or simply in a situation, where the naked facts could hurt or embarrass someone, then tact might be required, and one could give priority to other aspects. If such a situation is handled well, could one say that this person was tactful?

This question was the topic for the Socratic Dialogue on Carnaval Weekend 2019 in Würzburg.
